Vom 7. bis 20. April fand die 71. Meisterschaft von Sankt Petersburg statt. Neben dem Favoriten Alexander Khalifman nahm auch der 5-fache Stadtmeister Mark Taimanov (Foto) teil.

Die Petersburger Meisterschaft war sehr stark besetzt, bei einem Elo-Schnitt von 2500 und neun teilnehmenden Großmeistern brachte sie einige Überraschungen. Es verlor z.B. der Favorit Alexander Khalifman in der ersten Runde gegen den Nachwuchsspieler Shaposhnikov und konnte nur den 5. Platz belegen.
